A new traveller site has been set up overnight in the grounds of the old Walthamstow Stadium.
A total of 14 caravans have appeared in the car park, which has been earmarked for a new bus depot.
Chairwoman of the Walthamstow Stadium Area Resident’s Association, Gail Penfold, visited the site today.
She said: “I have already had a polite conversation with a few of the travellers and will be meeting with the head of the family this evening.
“As they are not local it is important that they are aware of local issues. It must be remembered that not all travellers are thieves.
“As chair of the association I have an obligation to welcome all newcomers to our area.
“It is hoped that for the period of their stay that they will respect the historical buildings and land and the amenities we have in our area.”
A Waltham Forest Council spokesman said: "We were informed a very short time ago that there are travellers on the old car park opposite the dog track.
“The owners are apparently aware and dealing with the issue.
“They appear to have arrived overnight and we are sending someone down today to assess any health and welfare concerns.”
