AN EARLY morning fire has nearly destroyed a block of flats and left two elderly people in hospital.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters were called to Oakhall Court, Wanstead, at 2.45am today (Monday, August 1) to tackle the blaze in Harrier Avenue.

The fire at the block of flats near Wanstead Station completely destroyed the second floor and roof of the building.

London Fire Brigade station manager Frazer Ferguson said: “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued an elderly man and woman from the flat and were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

"Around 50 residents from the block were evacuated as a precaution.

"Fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the morning damping down small pockets of fire.”

Fire crews from Leytonstone, Leyton, Stratford, Woodford, Hainault and Plaistow attended the scene in the early hours of this morning and managed to get fire under control by about 6.15am.

The cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation.

Bus routes including the 66 and 145 are still subject to delays and diversions near the A12 junction with Harrier Avenue.
