A TREASURED green space is once again under threat of development, it is feared.
Evergreen Field, in High Street, Wanstead, was bought by Furlong Homes from the Metropolitan Police 15 years ago, prompting the formation of the Wanstead Society to campaign against housing being built on the site.
The council in 2004 ruled that the space must be used for recreational purposes and the site has remained empty.
Now it has emerged that the field has been sold to Ilford-based Dalco Developments, raising concern that an attempt to build on the plot is imminent.
Wanstead Society member Geoff Hosrnell said: "Selling this field could be disastrous for Wanstead. It would be a kick in the teeth if this new company developed on the land.
"We would put up a very strong fight against any development.
"If this company's intention is to apply for planning permission or build first and then apply later then we will have a fight on our hands."
Dalco is registered at a residential address in Wanstead Park Road, Ilford, with Dalbir Singh Sanger as a director.
The Guardian has so far been unable to contact Mr Singh Sanger.
It is understood that Furlong Homes will be paid up to 10 per cent of any future development profit as a condition of the Evergreen Field deal.
The field was tidied up at the beginning of the month following requests from the Wanstead Society, after it became a haven for rats.
