Wapping Hockey Club won the Men’s East Division One indoor tournament after entering for the first time on Sunday.
The tournament took place at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, with the Wapping squad comprised of players from their top three men’s teams.
With the competition taking place over Saturday and Sunday, Wapping began with a 4-1 win over Bishop’s Stortford in their opening fixture.
A brace from former England junior international Chris Fell and further strikes from Dan Chancellor and ex-Wales international Dominic Graham rounded off a comfortable victory.
And the goals kept on coming in Wapping’s second fixture, which resulted in a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Ipswich.
Fell again did the bulk of the damage, running in four goals, whilst Chancellor and Matt Bunyan also got in on the act.
In their final fixture of the first day, Wapping crushed Norwich Dragons 8-0. Fell hit the back of the net four further times and was ably assisted by Graham (3) and Ryan D’Souza.
Day two saw Fell, Graham and Bunyan unavailable, meaning a late call-up for men’s Thirds coach Norval Scott.
However, the changes did not weaken the Wapping side, who overcame Bourne Deeping 5-3 in their opening fixture.
Ollie Davies and player-coach D’Souza both helped themselves to braces, with Michiel Marck snatching the other goal.
Wapping finally tasted defeat at the fifth attempt as Sudbury picked up a 4-1 win; Chancellor scoring the east Londoner’s consolation goal.
However, a 6-2 triumph over Wisbech in their final match ensured the title for Wapping, who went into the tie knowing they had to win by four clear goals.
The margin of victory was ensured thanks to strikes from Scott (2), Heye Scheftel (2) and D’Souza (2).
Player-coach D’Souza said: “I was very pleased with how quickly we adapted to the indoor format with no preparation at all.
“Indoor hockey is something we will be looking to do more of in future; it has benefits for fitness, mental strength and technical ability that improves the outdoor game.”
