CANCER patients will continue to benefit from financial advice after a charity extended funding of a benefits and welfare service.

Macmillan has been helping patients at King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford access financial help throughout 2012.

From July to September this year, they helped 153 patients access a total of £340,650 in benefits.

The charity has agreed to extend its funding of the project until December 2013.

As part of the scheme a case worker is based at the hospitals two days a week, linking with a support worker based at Redbridge Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Patients can be referred to the service by the doctors and nurses caring for them in hospital, but they can also contact the case-worker directly themselves.

Divisional Nurse Director Judith Douglas said: “This is fantastic news for our patients.

“People with cancer often find themselves struggling financially.

“This service makes sure that people are aware of the benefits and grants they are entitled to and provides help with claiming them.”
