A BAKERY has been shut down after inspectors found it infested with rats and mice.
Environmental Health staff made the grisly discovery at Aadams Bagel Bakery in Hoe Street, Walthamstow, last Wednesday (October 24).
They found a dead mouse in a cupboard, droppings everywhere and evidence that packs of chick peas and split peas had been gnawed.
A council spokesman added: "The officer who attended the premises witnessed numerous rat holes in the floors and walls that indicated that the infestation had been established for many months."
A Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order has been issued by magistrates banning the bakery's owners from reopening until inspectors are satisfied there is no longer a risk to public health.
Cllr Clyde Loakes, cabinet member for environment, said the discovery had made him feel sick.
He said: “It turns your stomach to look at the photos taken of this filthy bakery.
“To think that food prepared here has been eaten by local residents is truly sickening."
He added: "How anyone with such a business can let it fall into such a state is frankly beyond comprehension.
"Rest assured I will be doing all I can to ensure officers hold this business fully to account for their appalling lack of hygiene.”
