THE future of Wanstead and Woodford police stations remains uncertain after the Metropolitan Police announced plans to sell off Scotland Yard to cut costs.
The flagship headquarters in central London has been earmarked for sale along with five other police stations, including Walthamstow.
And now the Met has launched a consultation with councils on which other stations will close and an announcement is due in six weeks.
Redbridge borough commander Sue Williams has said Wanstead and Woodford police stations are unlikely to remain open as they are no longer fit for purpose.
A campaign supported by community groups and Redbridge Council is calling for the stations to be saved to maintain accessibility and act as a deterrent to criminals.
Greater London Assembly member for Redbridge, Roger Evans, said: "They know the seriousness of public feeling. We will just have to wait and see."
The Met has been ordered to cut its budget by £500 million by 2015.
