STUDENTS took part in an hour-long debate in the style of the BBC's Question Time as part of Local Democracy Week.

The debate was chaired by thee year 12 students from Wanstead High School in Redbridge Lane West on Friday afternoon.

On the panel was Inspector Christoper Chandler and councillors Dev Sharma, Hugh Cleaver and Robin Turbefield.

Topics debated included the proposed closure of the A&E department at King George Hospital in Goodmayes, how the borough was affected during the riots last summer and student tuition fees.

Head of sixth form, Malcolm Fenn said: "The whole occasion was successful in engaging students in political debate and giving experience to several students in public speaking, as some students chaired the event, others asked questions, while others responded to the panel’s views."
