Improving GCSE’s
The local school Walthamstow Academy is doing of plenty things to make everyone achieve the best possible GCSE’s. One example of this is Gifted and Talented; this is for the people that are achieving higher than C’s in academic subjects such as English, Maths and Science etc. the gifted the talented is for the people that are achieving higher than C’s in expressive arts such as Art, Music and Drama etc. However you need to do well in 5 or more lessons to be chosen.

Students are encouraged to keep up their good work and also are praised for doing so well. These chosen students must then go to clubs like debate mate, book club etc, to make sure they stay at their level of work and also have other things to put on their CV. This is very beneficial as the students then feel praised and have a push to achieve even higher than they are if possible. The clubs they must attend also gives the students other skills which will be beneficial in their working life for example ‘debate mate’ is good for learning how to get your points across in a professional manor and also to open the students minds on the political arguments and the things happening around us and their views towards different topics.

I asked a student Gloria in Year 11 if this enrichment is beneficial to her, she said “It’s beneficial because it also helps me reach my highest potential by doing these different things and it looks good on university applications”. This shows us that the students are looking at this as a big opportunity to improve their skills. I asked another student Tayler said “Yes it’s beneficial but they need to help us more” the enrichment could be more helpful for some students however Gifted and Talented seems successful.

Another enrichment the school has, is the extra courses during the half term of October which is to help them learn about equality and diversity and getting quizzed on your own knowledge about those topics, it opens the minds of these GCSE students and shows them how the working world works and how people should be treated. As well as this course being short and also fun for the students they gain an extra GCSE and have additional information to put on their CV’s. Makay a student who took part in this course and passed said that “It was worth it and I enjoyed the course and gained a GCSE, if I could recommend the course I would” I also asked Michael who also took the course he said “the course was alright” he didn’t have much to say about it. But the course is beneficial if you get an extra GCSE. Walthamstow Academy is making it easy for the students to have interesting information on their CV and achieve the best that they can.
