Are we equal or are we different? It’s been a while since the 1950’s, but does that make a difference to a woman’s status?
In a survey of 10 children, all of them admitted that their mum was the main cook of the house. In another survey a staggering 7 out of 10 mums not only cooked but worked as well.
DING, DING, DING. News flash we’re in the 21st century, in debt and in stress. Where is the support for one another? What kind of relationship is this? And what is the male spouse doing? ‘To have and to hold until death do us part’, it’s the little things that count, like taking part, like taking out the trash or help your kids with their homework. Couples can share their responsibilities even in these modern days. In the beginning God made men and woman equally, why has that changed? Suddenly men are superior to woman and won’t take on the same tasks as them.
If you thought the roles of women have changed, think again. Evidentially women are still expected to clean and be a housewife. In the latest advert of ‘flash’ (cleaning product) you’ll witness a WOMEN shining floors, wiping dust of window sills and even bathroom tiles. Exhibit B in a ‘vanish’ commercial, a boy has a stain on his white top and A WOMAN comes to rescue with a solution. Unfortunately for you I’m not just being biased. Stanley, 29, Walthamstow, agrees with me that men and women are not equal he believes ‘women carry more responsibility because since after the second world war, they started taking on heavy duty work, like in ammunition factories and labour. Which made men more redundant?’
Antonio Shearman, 37, Waltham Forest also thinks men and women are not equal. Mrs Shearman thinks that the expectations of today are very similar to the ones of the 1950’s. Mrs Shearman also believes ‘women have taken on too much to handle, so much so that they’ve become career minded. At this point men take advantage and leave women with the housework. What makes things better for women is the introduction of contraception.’
It appears that the achievements of women such as Emily Davison, Emmeline Pankhurst and Millicent Fawcett (all members of the suffragettes) were just a waste of energy. Still today in some cases there is still unequal pay, there still remain sexual discrimination and there are women eligible for work, but not working. Are women and women equal or different? It appears we are different. What do you think?
