As the cold winter days grow closer to us, so does the annual ‘Mayors Christmas Light Switch On’. Many different local primary schools and local clubs are taking part in this year’s phenomenon, making it the biggest one yet. The event is taking place in East Ham, High Street North, on Saturday 24th November from 4.30pm. The event is part of the ‘Lets Get This Party Started’ scheme.

Last year’s event was a memorable one, which was led by a five foot lotus flower through High Street South, thanks to Vicarage Primary School (in Vicarage Lane). This year’s event is promising to be bigger, better and even more spectacular.

Also new to this year’s spectacle is a competition for creating the best masterpiece lantern, which will be judged on creativity, materials used, and visual impact. Anyone interested in entering should ask their local primary school for more details.

Joined by the Mayor of Newham himself, Sir Robin Wales, many people from the local community as well as school children joined in the fun, and brightened up not only the look, but the atmosphere of the area, and was thoroughly enjoyed by many.
