Modern day society seems only to care about the superficial. In Essex it’s all about how big your hair can get and how orange your skin can look without looking too much like Snookie. While trends like these may be the hottest look right now there is the overriding one that’s lasted and endured no matter what crises the economy may be facing. That is my readers; is the trend of skinny.

Ask any girl of today about what they dread about themselves and while the usual flat hair or chubby cheeks may come in to play they will always, no doubt at all; mention their weight and body image. This is showing us that skinny isn’t just an image for us young women it’s a way of life. With sites being set up in the name of ‘thinspiration’ it’s no wonder that even a size six young woman feels too big. As a young woman I struggle with this as well and constantly- much to the chagrin of my friends and family- belittle my weight and wish I was thinner.

However the media only gives us what we want to see, the Rimmel lipstick commercial features a thing beautiful actress with a more than obvious gap in her two front teeth. While we all argue for the need of more realistic people on TV I've yet to come across one person who doesn’t say she should get it fixed. So instead rimmel shows us Kate moss and her ‘perfect body’ and ‘perfect’ teeth because even though wee hate her for her ‘perfection’ we crave looking to her for a sense of unfulfilment within ourselves. It has just become so common place to see ‘perfection’ that we now expect it and by doing so reinforce in ourselves these negative images of and upon ourselves. So my dear readers I leave you with one question to think about until my next article. How are we supposed to love ourselves when we can’t even love the ‘imperfectly perfect’ girls we see in the media?
