REDBRIDGE council is likely to apply for funding from TfL for a puffin crossing in the Broadway, Woodford Green.

The crossing, which would cost an estimated £84,500, was first proposed in 2005.

There have been an average of 0.67 traffic accidents a year in the Broadway since June 2010, a figure higher than the London average of 0.44.

At a meeting of the council's Area Two committee last night, Councillor Linda Huggett of Monkhams ward, said: “Since the introduction of the new Sainsbury’s in the Broadway, traffic conditions have got worse and if we don’t get a crossing we will have a serious accident.”

Richard Hoskins, councillor for Church End ward, said: “It’s not what you would call a major accident blackspot, but if the funding can be found let’s do it.”

Councillor Felicity Banks asked Highways officer Cliff Woolnoth if a zebra crossing would be cheaper.

He said it would cost around half as much.

Cllr Banks said: “If it’s cheaper perhaps we could use some of the money for a crossing near Ray Lodge School, too.”

Installing the puffin crossing would necessitate the removal of two parking bays which it is estimated would cost the council £7,000 in lost revenue per year.

Councillors agreed to consult residents and traders on the proposals.
