POLICE investigating the case of an 11-year-old schoolgirl who was seriously injured after being hit by a car have arrested a man.
The 38-year-old motorist was seized on suspicion of careless driving following the crash in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, on Tuesday afternoon (November 20).
The girl, thought to be a pupil from nearby Lammas School, remains in a critical condition fighting for her life in hospital this morning (Thursday).
She suffered serious head injuries after being run over by the car, said to be a silver BMW 316.
It happened just after 3pm close to the junctions with Hitcham Road and Seymour Road.
A Met spokesman said the driver stopped at the scene.
He added: "Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact officers at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage on 020 8597 4874."
The arrested man has been released on bail until mid-February.
Lea Bridge Road is the most dangerous in the borough, according to Waltham Forest Council.
In a 2011 report it said that in a 36-month period up to March 2009 a total of 80 people were injured on the highway - the highest rate in the borough
A study by the Department of Transport, also published last year, confirmed this and stated that ten people had been killed on Lea Bridge Road since 1999.
