AN £83,000 package of safety measures will be installed on a Woodford Green Road after it was deemed a priority because of the high accident rate.
St Barnabas Road, between Broadmead Road and Snakes Lane East, has been the scene of five accidents in the last three years.
The road has an average of 2.78 accidents per kilometre per annum whilst the average for similar roads in Redbridge is 0.55.
At a meeting of the council’s Area Two Committee, councillors agreed to introduce measures including flashing slow down signs and improved street lighting.
But plans to introduce speed cushions and traffic islands have been ditched and areas of 'at any time' waiting restriction revised after the majority of residents opposed them in a council consultation.
Errol Denton, 47, presented a 116 name petition from residents opposed to the speed cushions and traffic islands which he said would lead to congestion, a loss of parking spaces and increase the risk of accidents.
He said: “We are happy they have listened to us. Flashing signs have done the trick on Hillside Avenue and we feel that they will work here.
“Improving the lighting will also be good as the majority of the accidents on this road happen at night.”
Consideration will also be given to extending the one hour ban on parking outside number 84-90 St Barnabas Road.
Speaking at last week's meeting where councillors approved the scheme, cllr Robin Turbefield of Bridge Ward said: "You do take your life into your own hands trying to cross that road.
"I have every sympathy with those who live there and I welcome these recommendations."
Discussions on the revised plans will now take place with TfL who will pay for the work.
