AN influential panel has requested more details on a proposal to open up a green space to the public.

The Conservation Advisory Panel, which reports to planning committees on applications in conservations areas, is considering a plan for Evergreen Field in High Street, Wanstead.

The Wanstead Society, which opposes a plan by the site owner to build homes, has proposed a range of community uses.

But Jim Wragg, an independent member on the panel, admitted: "It wasn't clear what the society wanted to use the field for."

Vice-chairman of the society, Eileen Finter, said: "We didn't play our hand completely first of all.

"We have quite a lot of ideas for schools and community activities, so we will give them that information.

"We are not regarding it as a setback."

Earlier in the week councillors on the Area One Committee, some of whom may rule on a future application, backed the society's plans.

The field is covered by the council's policy on protected green spaces.

The Wanstead Society has also written to the chief executive of Redbridge Council, Roger Hampson, to ask if the field can be added to a list of community assets under the Localism Act, which would add a further level of protection.

The Conservation Advisory Panel is due to meet on December 12.
