FIRE fighters at Woodford fire station accepted a £1000 cheque from supermarket workers on behalf of a charity close to their own hearts.
Staff from Sainsbury’s in George Lane, South Woodford have been raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity, which helps injured fire fighters and their families, since June.
Presenting the cash, Fiona O’Leary, manager of the store, said: “It’s such a worthwhile cause and one that doesn’t get as much publicity as other charities.
"We know this money will make a real difference."
Tony Knight, watch manager at the station, said: “The Fire Fighters charity helped me when I injured my shoulder at work.
“They provide everything from recuperation to physiotherapy and counselling.
“They do an amazing job, not just for serving fire fighters but also for their families and those who have retired.”
And Steve Brown, the Fire Brigade’s Borough Commander for Redbridge, added: “We are very grateful to everyone at Sainsbury’s who raised this money.
“This is a very important charity which has helped a lot of friends and colleagues.”
