AIR cadets helped kick off Christmas for sheltered housing residents by hosting an advent party.

Members of Epping and North Weald Air Cadets headed to Wheelers Farm Gardens, North Weald, on Saturday to bring festive cheer to the elderly community.

The young volunteers helped decorate the communal hall and spent the evening chatting with guests while serving hot sausage rolls and mince pies.

Cadets also presented residents with a bird table to take pride of place in their communal garden.

The party was part of the cadets' Back Chat project, set up by members Rosie Mercer and Lauren Elder, which aims to offer companionship and a helping hand to the older generation.

Rosie, 14, said: "We were going to give a gift of a special Christmas decoration for residents to remember this day by, but I'm glad we decided on something different - they have so many already."

Sgt Lewis Kelly, 17, said: "This was a perfect way to give back to our local community.

"We bridged the generation gap through a fun and meaningful evening that I know was appreciated by both parties."

The squadron's commanding officer Flt Lt John Hawkins added: "I'm proud to say our cadets have committed to maintaining their relationships with older communities in the district.

"Both young and old have greatly benefited from the experience."
