A PERFORMER is to attempt to break the world record for eating the most flames in 30 seconds.

Preacher Muad’dib, of Cann Hall Road in Leytonstone, will aim to extinguish around 50 rods in the allotted time.

The 33-year-old, who has opened for rock legend Alice Cooper, holds the record of 53, but the rules were changed to open a new category where re-using the same fire rods is banned.

But he now plans to break the record for this category, which stands at 39, while raising money for domestic abuse charities.

He said: "I want to smash the record. It feels like cheating if you only break it by a fraction. It’s kind of a revenge because I used to hold it and I think I really can go a lot higher.

"But I think I should try and use it to do some good, rather than for purely selfish reasons."

Mr Muad'dib holds a series of fire-related records, including the greatest number of flames blown without refuelling.

But perhaps his most impressive - and unusual - achievement is breaking the world record for the length of time he can balance a lawnmower on his chin, at one minute 11 seconds. And he admits his job is fraught with danger.

"I’ve not had an injury yet but there’s a constant risk of burns and death – you’re effectively putting fire inside your head," he said.

"I’m not too worried about it because this is my job, it’s my life. When you do this as a living though you will get injured at some point, I just hope it’s not that night."

The attempt is due to take place in February.
