CAROL singers at a South Woodford church are hoping to break a world record later this month.

Around 100 members of the congregation of St Mary’s Church in High Road will take part in a nationwide attempt to break the record for the most people singing Christmas carols at the same time.

The current record was set last year when 18,144 singers sang five classic carols in unison.

Revd Ian Tarrant said he believed his was the only church in Wanstead and Woodford planning to take part in the giant singing session.

“I hope some other churches in the area hear about it and get involved because it should be a lot of fun,” he said.

The event which takes place on December 16 at 7pm has been organised by Premier Christian Radio, Britain’s largest Christian broadcaster.

As part of the attempt they will play the five carols -  Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing – live on air for any churches who require backing music.

Rvd Tarrant said: “Fortunately we have our own excellent organist, Frederick Stocken, so we won’t be needing the radio to help us.

“I’m very excited, I’ve never tried to beat a world record before.

“We would like to invite everyone from our local community to join us on December 16th.

“It will be great to be part of a national challenge while enjoying festive carols in our local church.”
