THERE are fears water leak could pose a risk to pedestrians as temperatures plummet.

The steady flow of water near four businesses in George Lane, South Woodford, was first reported on November 12 by shop staff at Argus Lighting.

But Thames Water is yet to fix the problem and concerns have been raised that it could ice over and create a hazard.

Kate Crowe, 62, of nearby Kenwood Gardens, said the water is a threat to public safety. She added: "It must be losing gallons of water. The pavement has been gritted, but the grit has now dispersed.

"With the cold weather it will turn into a sheet of ice – it is so dangerous."

Tim Smith of Creative Biscuit cafe said: "Before there is an accident it should get fixed.

"I must have had about eight people come in and ask me if I’ve noticed the leak – yes I have, it’s not hard to miss."

Metin Mustafa of Woods fish and chips said: "I saw a woman slip over on it on Monday. It’s been there for so long, but nobody cares."

Andrew Miller of Argus Lighting added: "I think it has become a water feature it has been there so long.

"It’s an accident waiting to happen."

A Thames Water spokesman said: "We are really sorry for the length of the time it has taken to get this repair done.

"It is important to us to get this leak fixed and on this occasion we accept we could have done it quicker. Our aim now is to get this repaired as soon as possible."
