A TEENAGER who is the third generation in his family to perform double base has been accepted into the National Youth Orchestra.
Matthew Paris, 14, of Theydon Mount, near Epping, whose father Colin and grandfather Nat both play the instrument, is due to make his first appearance with the orchestra in January.
He said: “I’m really excited to be representing Epping as a double bass player in such an inspirational national team.
“I’ve been playing the double bass for seven years and can’t wait to join the 165 members of the orchestra touring the country.”
The former Chigwell School pupil, who now studies at the Purcell music school, was crowned Essex Young Musician of the Year in July, making him the second youngest winner in the competition’s 28-year history.
The orchestra is billed to be performing Gustav Holst’s The Planets, Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes and John Adams’ Guide to Strange Places with conductor John Wilson when it goes on tour and is also due to play at the BBC Proms next year.
