MORE than 2,000 senior citizens are being treated to a free Christmas dinner this week courtesy of Waltham Forest Council.
The series of slap-up meals, at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, Leyton Orient's Football ground and Chingford Assembly Hall, have been organised to celebrate a "landmark" year for the borough.
The older residents who have been invited to attend were mostly nominated by care homes, day centres and friends from across the borough.
Council leader Cllr Chris Robbins said: "We thought this would be fitting way to mark the end of a landmark year that has seen a visit from Her Majesty the Queen, the excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic Torch relays and, of course, the splendour of the Games themselves.
“Last year we were able to provide some 800 senior citizens with a free Christmas dinner, but this year we’ve upped the ante to make 2012 an even more memorable year for our older residents.”
