An artist who grew up near one of the district’s Underground stations will soon see his work displayed there.
Mark Wallinger, who was born in Chigwell and attended West Hatch High School, created the Labyrinth series, showing circular black and white mazes, as part of the Art on the Underground project.
The work, which is on display across central London and will soon be installed in Chigwell, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Theydon Bois and Epping, was inspired by Wallinger’s use of the Tube as a child.
He said the continuous lines in the mazes he portrays reflected the constant flow of trains and people on the Underground.
He added: “Mostly we go about our business, journeying to work on the Tube and return home along a prescribed route.
“The seeming chaos of the rush hour is really just the mass of individuals following the thread of their lives home.”
He has created 270 individual pieces - the largest ever commission for Art on the Underground.
