Construction work to turn Walthamstow Stadium into a housing development is expected to start within weeks.

Housing developer London & Quadrant (L&Q) has announced it will start work on the 294-home estate shortl, but has not given an exact date.

There was initial confusion over whether building work was already underway after a digger appeared on the on Friday last week.

However, L&Q said it was its sub-contractor, Oakwood Demolition, which has placed cabins on the site in preparation for the forthcoming work.

A spokesman added: “We look forward to informing local residents of the start date for the project, which we hope will be within the next few weeks.”

Gail Penfold, chair of the Walthamstow Stadium Area Residents’ Association, said L&Q assured her that Oakwood would now leave the site and residents would be informed before any construction begins.

L&Q won planning permission last year for its controversial plans after a longcampaign by groups opposed to the development.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson then decided not to call in the decision and Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles, was denied the chance to intervene when Waltham Forest Council quickly approved all the final paperwork.
