Wanstead House or The Allan Burgess Centre could be used as police contact points when Wanstead Police Station closes.

The police station has been earmarked for closure as part of a package of cuts designed to save the Met £500million by 2015.

Police say they will set up access points for the public to report crime in person at alternative venues for at least one hour three times a week.

At a meeting of the council’s area one committee on Monday night, councillor Sue Nolan said she had attended a meeting with Borough Commander Sue Williams to discuss alternative access points for the public.

It is believed that Wanstead Library is under consideration, but councillor Nolan said: “The library is a very open place and it is not particularly a good spot for somebody reporting a really bad crime.”

When asked what alternatives she had put forward she told the meeting that she believed the Corner House (now called the Allan Burgess Centre) in High Street and Wanstead House on The Green were better options.

Inspector Jack Rainey, the man in charge of Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams in the north west of Redbridge, said: “Wanstead House is an excellent location as far as I’m concerned.

“However, there may or may not be a cost implication which I have been told is an absolute no no, but we are discussing that and hopefully that will be resolved.”

Inspector Rainey said he was trying to ensure any contact points were available for more than the three hour a week minimum.

He added that he did not know when Wanstead Police Station would close.
