Another free school set to open in the borough next year has announced details of its plans and services.
The new school, to be called Oasis Academy Walthamstow, was approved today along with three others in the borough when a wave of 102 new free schools had approval announced by Education Secretary Michael Gove.
The group who submitted the bid, Oasis Community Learning, announced that the new school will be for students aged 11-16 with six forms of entry, opening with an initial intake of 180 year 7 students in September 2014.
The school will teach the National Curriculum to prepare students for national tests and examinations at all levels as well as offering an enrichment programme in partnership with local businesses, arts organisations and community groups.
The school is to be fully inclusive, accepting all young people irrespective of faith or ability.
Oasis will also develop a new community hub in the area in partnership with local organisations, offering young people and their families a range of opportunities, activities and community services.
A suitable site for the school is being decided and an announcement confirming the preferred location will be made soon.
Open evenings for prospective year 7 students and their families to hear more about the school will be held in the autumn.
Oasis developed proposals for the school in partnership with a group of local parents and educationalists called Walthamstow Secondary School Initiative (WSSI).
Jen Powell, chair of WSSI, said: “We are delighted that our long-held dreams of opening a new community secondary school in the heart of this community have finally been realised.
She thanked all the families and partners who had supported their plans.
Steve Chalke, Oasis founder, said: “I am thrilled that Oasis has been given the opportunity to open a new secondary free school academy in Walthamstow.
“This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the area as we work with many business and community partners to develop an innovative curriculum as well as a wide range of extra-curricular enriching activities for local young people.”
The Oasis group sponsors 28 academies nationwide.
