Two girls from a Leyton primary school will have artwork showcased to an international audience of thousands after winning a UEFA initiative.

Suzanne Wilson, 8, and Maariya Patel, 10, submitted the work as part of a program called Shine on Saturdays, which is a charity based in the school where 60 children attend each Saturday for extracurricular activities.

The Newport Primary School students will have their ‘Kings of Europe’ themed artwork displayed at this year’s UEFA Champions Festival at the Olympic Park after winning the UEFA Champions Street Art Initiative.

Suzanne, who is in year 4, and Maariya, who is in year 5 went up against fierce competition from children aged between six and 16 years from both Newport Primary School and other schools around London but they emerged victorious.

Steve Hawkes, Director of Communications and Enrichment at Newport Primary School, said: “They all produced some great work, but it was Susanne and Maariya who drew the winning poster.

“Both myself and the other teachers at Newport are very proud and happy that our entry was so successful.

“We all look forward to seeing the girl's poster on a massive scale hanging around the edge of the stadium.”

The art, which welcomes the Champions League and Women’s Champions League finals to London as part of the festival, was chosen as one of six from different schools made to help capture the spirit of the ‘Kings of Europe’ theme in London.

The 2013 UEFA Champions Festival is a free four day football celebration featuring a series of family-friendly activities taking place close to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from May 23-26.
