A date has been set for building work to start on turning Walthamstow Stadium into a housing estate.

Housing developer London & Quadrant (L&Q) has announced it will start work on the 294-home estate from Monday, June 3.

They will begin the process of dismantling some of the buildings to be demolished and setting up equipment that day, in preparation for more large-scale building work to come.

There was initial confusion over whether construction was already underway after a digger appeared on the site last Friday.

However, L&Q said it was its sub-contractor, Oakwood Demolition, which has placed cabins on the site in preparation for the forthcoming work.

L&Q won planning permission last year for its controversial plans after a long campaign by groups opposed to the development.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson then decided not to call in the decision and Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles, was denied the chance to intervene when Waltham Forest Council quickly approved all the final paperwork.
