As part of the council's ongoing school improvement plans demolition work began at Mission Grove school on Friday.

Cllr Clare Coghill, Waltham Forest Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, saw work begin on the vacant social services building to make way for the new build.

The council is building a year 6 block as a main part of the expansion, which will aid the transition to secondary school.

The new build has an enclosed canopy alongside a green roof where children can learn outside, four classrooms, an office, a Senco area, a small hall with folding walls for flexible space, two break-out spaces and extensive landscaping.

“It’s tremendous to see such fundamental changes taking place to the borough’s schools,” said Cllr Clare Coghill, Waltham Forest Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.

“The council is absolutely committed to ensuring the borough’s younger residents have the best possible chance at a first-class future, and giving the right facilities and the right learning environment plays a major part in ensuring this happens.

"It was great to be at the new site to see the work get underway, and much like the school’s teachers, governors and pupils I can’t wait to see the finished results.”

The new build is due to be completed by October and then refurbishment is due to be completed by early 2014.
