Muslim community leaders across the borough have issued a joint statement condemning the murder of a British soldier in Woolwich last week.

The death of 25-year-old drummer Lee Rigby outside his barracks has heightened community tensions in some parts of the country following claims that the suspects in the killing are Islamist extremists.

Last night Redbridge Council leader Cllr Keith Prince met with the leadership of Ilford Islamic Centre, North Ilford Islamic Centre, Belgrave Islamic Centre, Al Noor Foundation, Seven Kings Mosque and South Woodford Mosque.

Following the meeting they issued this statement:

“Whoever kills a soul it is as if he has killed mankind entirely and whoever saves a soul it is as if he has saved mankind entirely [Surah 5:32].

"As Members of Redbridge Community, we share the pain and grief of the family of Drummer Lee Rigby.

"We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences and condemn the actions of the people who committed this murder without reservation.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathy goes to the family at this very difficult time."
