A series of screenings of films made by Leytonstone legend Alfred Hitchcock are set to take place across Waltham Forest to celebrate the opening of a new cinema.
The showings around the borough, entitled Hitchcock’s East End, are meant to celebrate the life and work of the Leytonstone-born movie director by highlighting the gothic and eccentric elements of the borough that may have influenced him.
The cinema legend’s critically-acclaimed film, Vertigo, will be put on in St Margaret’s Church in Woodhouse Road, Leytonstone, on Saturday, September 28, before other movies are played in a variety of venues yet to be announced.
The screening includes a special guided walk around Hitchcock’s birthplace and the streets on which he grew up, and the event will cost residents just £5.50.
The screenings have been organised by Waltham Forest Council as well as Hill Residential and Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), which are also behind the new complex being built on the former Arcade site in Hoe Street, Walthamstow.
The Scene at Cleveland Place, a complex featuring an Empire cinema, 121 new homes, as well as shops and restaurants, is currently under construction.
The cinema is set to open towards the end of 2014.
