A mother who called for safety measures outside the only school in the area without a dedicated crossing has welcomed new proposals.

Mother-of-three Jennifer Campbell criticised fellow parents for parking irresponsibly outside  Nightingale Primary in Ashbourne Avenue, South Woodford.

She said her daughter Charlotte, 6, was almost hit by a car after a parked van blocked the view of oncoming traffic.

Now Liberal Democrat Cllr Ian Bond has proposed a short-term solution of stricter parking restrictions and a clampdown on alleged misuse of disabled parking permits.

He has said he would like to eventually see the road narrowed and a crossing installed, but this could cost up to £45,000 and take 18 months to implement.

Cllr Bond said: “It is clear that unfortunately a few parents do park with little regard to either the parking restrictions or the obstruction they might cause.

“In the short term we will ask for more parking enforcement near the school in an attempt to persuade people to park more sensibly.

“We will also co-operate with the school to see what can be done to communicate with parents and pupils about travelling to work and road safety.”

Mrs Campbell said: “I am happy this serious issue is now being addressed. I hope Cllr Bond is going to be able to get something done.

Cllr Bond’s proposals have been submitted to council officers.
