A YouTube video depicting an enraged Adolf Hitler fuming about staffing issues at Whipps Cross University Hospital has been condemned by trust bosses.
In a scene taken from 2004 film Downfall, Hitler, played by actor Bruno Ganz, shouts at his generals for nearly four minutes in German while English subtitles scroll below.
The scene is commonly used by people who replace the original subtitles to either express their own frustrations, or parody other people’s extreme reactions.
The video, posted by ‘Mark Storey’, sees the Fuhrer raging about existing jobs being downgraded, favouritism and staff being forced to reapply for their positions as part of an overhaul of finances aimed at solving a budget crisis at the trust.
However Bart’s Health, which runs the Leytonstone hospital and four others in east London, has said the video is in “poor taste” and would be offensive to many staff and patients.
A spokeswoman said: ““To choose a video depicting the final hours of Hitler to draw comparisons with an open, structured consultation is in poor taste and will be offensive to the feelings of many of our patients and staff.
“We wish to be absolutely clear that Barts Health has no plans, now or in the future, to close Whipps Cross Hospital. In the last 18 months Whipps Cross has seen more investment than in the previous five years, with the opening of new accident and emergency and maternity facilities. Two weeks ago a new acute admissions unit was opened, and further investment in services is planned over the coming months.”
The Guardian has been unable to contact the video’s maker.
