A first-time business owner says she hopes launching online will one day lead to success on the high street.
Collette Benson-Oniha, 28, will tonight launch children’s fashion house Boojiebabies Boutique, a business she will run from her conservatory.
The one-woman operation stocks fashion, footwear and accessories for children up to the age of 10 and customises well-known brands’ garments by adding items like diamonds or studs.
Ms Benson-Oniha has fitted out her conservatory like a warehouse in her Walthamstow home, where she keeps her stock.
She says her hope is to launch her own fashion label and eventually open a store in London, but says she is making a conscious decision not to move too quickly and save costs on expenditures like rent.
“As this is my first business, and looking at the economic times we’re in, I thought it would be good not to venture into opening a store, but rather do it online and see how it grows from there,” she said.
“I hope I’ll see growth from what I do and hopefully support will gather and soon I can launch my own brand.”
She also said she wants to help young people have greater access to styles of their own.
“Boojie means ‘fancy’ in slang French, I want to give that to children under 10,” she said.
Previously a music performer, Ms Benson-Oniha said she had the idea of launching a children’s fashion shop for five years and the online launch was the result of 10 months of hard work setting up the business.
The launch also sees Boojiebabies commit £1 per purchase to Beckton children’s hospice Richard House.
The website, www.boojiebabies.com, goes live tonight.
