A man convicted of sexual assault and banned from travelling on the Tube has been handed a community order.

The sentencing of Gurbax Athwel, of Villiers Close in Leyton, was postponed three times since he was found guilty on August 16.

Yesterday at the City of London Magistrates’ Court the 43-year-old was given a 12-month community order.

He was also fined £100 each for two breaches of suspended sentences.

Athwel had been bailed until sentencing on the condition he would not use the Tube unless meeting with lawyers or probation staff and to attend court.

Sentencing had been postponed twice for documents, including a mental health report, to be compiled and once because an interpreter was unavailable.

Athwel, who claims to suffer from schizophrenia, twice groped the thigh of a woman who was returning from a night out in Vauxhall.

The incident occurred at around 7.30am on March 24 on a Central line train.
