A schoolboy who expressed concern that youth crime has increased due to a lack of leisure facilities has earned a summit on the issue with the man in charge of Redbridge Council.

Elliot Wilkinson, 15, of Caterham High School in Caterham Avenue, Ilford, wrote to Cllr Keith Prince to raise the issue as part of a school project and called for investment in facilities for teenagers.

Cllr Prince has agreed to attend the school on November 5 to discuss the matter further.

Daniel Oliver, a spokesman for the Jack Carter Centre youth club, in The Drive, Ilford, said there should be more services targeted at young people who don’t enjoy sport.

He said: “There is a fair bit to do in Redbridge for young people. There are lots of parks and clubs which do a lot of sports.

“It is young people who are not very sporty who may get bored around here and commit crime.

There are only four youth clubs left in Redbridge, and we are the only one which is not run by the council.

“We have to generate our own income, and receive no funding from the council which explains why there are not many left.”

The Guardian is awaiting comment from the council.
