A Waltham Forest man who died in central London fell to his death with his partner in a freak accident at a building site, it has emerged.

Gavin Brewer, 32, a British Transport Police (BTP) officer from Waltham Forest, and Stuart Meads, 34, from Hackney, were named by police yesterday.

They were reportedly arguing near the site, on the corner of Hampstead Road and Netley Street, near Euston station, at around 2.30am on Saturday morning.

After returning from a night out in Camden they appear to have leaned on the barrier which collapsed under their weight.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Stephen Baker, a friend of the couple, has paid tribute to the pair.

“They were a wonderful couple. They clearly cared for each other a great deal,” he told the Evening Standard.

“They had just come back from a tour of Europe. They were very happy and in love, by all accounts.”

A post mortem was carried out yesterday.

Police are treating the deaths as unexplained, but it is not thought anyone else was involved.
Camden police, along with the Health and Safety Executive, are investigating.

Floral tributes and messages have been left at the scene.

It has been reported that property developers have now reinforced the barrier.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “BTP can confirm that serving officer PC Gavin Brewer died whilst off duty early on Saturday, 19 October morning on Hampstead Road, NW1.

“PC Brewer was based at Finsbury Park station and had been with the Force for nine years.

“BTP officers and staff are continuing to support his family and friends through this very difficult time.”
