A police officer has been hospitalised after being attacked.
At around 1.20am this morning police were called to the junction of Sewardstone Road and Lea Valley Road in Chingford to reports of a crash involving a Toyota Yaris and a VW Golf.
At the scene a 27-year-old man was breathalysed.
When an officer attempted to arrest the man for drink-driving, he was bitten and headbutted.
The policeman then attempted to remove his ASP baton from his waistband and the man is then believed to have taken the baton from the officer and hit him across the head with it.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of Grevious Bodily Harm and drink driving.
He is currently in custody.
Neither of those involved in the collision required hospital treatment.
The officer has since been released from hospital.
