Wild winds today felled trees and branches, damaged cars and homes and brought down scaffolding, but luckily no one in Waltham Forest appears to have suffered any injuries.

The weather system, named St Jude by forecasters, brought winds of up to 69 miles per hour to London.

Waltham Forest Council received over 200 reports of fallen or dangerous trees and families stuck inside properties in Clacton and Belgrave Roads in Walthamstow due to fallen trees blocking doors.

Many commuters were forced to work from home as rail services were severely disrupted due to damaged overhead wires and debris on tracks.

The London Ambulance Service was not called to deal with any storm-related incidents in the borough today.

Around 100 yards of scaffolding being used to refurbish shop fronts in Francis Road, Leyton, was blown on to cars and across the street, closing the road for several hours as workers cleared the area.

Around a dozen cars were damaged as well as several buildings.

The council’s tree contractor is putting in extra hours to clear streets across the borough.

Greater Anglia suspended all trains for most of the day before running some services out of Liverpool Street.

The Central line saw services suspended north of Leytonstone and severe delays elsewhere from around 8am until midday.

Refuse collection is on schedule and the council is offering free wood chippings and logs from fallen trees to residents from Leyton Jubilee Park’s car park between 9am and 5pm in the coming days.
