A tree blown over by high winds smashed through the window of a family home.

Sara Piperdy, 43, husband Humi Asif, 45 and their two children were sleeping yesterday morning when the tree snapped and crashed into the bathroom at their home in Hollywood Way, Woodford Green.

The base of the trunk landed on a wooden shed which was completely flattened.

The family moved into the house just three weeks ago and had discussed shortening the tree as it hung very close to the property.

Ms Piperdy said: “A private tree surgeon came today who said it was too big for him and advised us that we shouldn’t even be in the house.

“It’s going to take a crane to lift the tree up and out, and there are concerns that when moving it out, if it swings either way, it could damage the rest of the house”.

Structural damage to the exterior wall of the bathroom in the attic means that, once the tree has eventually been removed, the two joining walls will need to be replaced.

“In terms of structural damage, the whole wall of the bathroom is destroyed because it has large cracks in it and its pressing up against the windows along the detached side of the house,” Ms Piperdy said.

The family cannot assess the full cost of the damage until the tree and large amounts of debris have been removed.

This was the third case of serious storm-related damage in the Oak Hill area.

Couple Saima Hussian and Marcel Bubelini of Oak Hill narrowly avoided serious injury when a large tree fell inches away from them and crushed a nearby car.
