A school has been told it requires improvement, but praised for progress in some areas.
Inspectors two years ago rated George Mitchell School, based in Farmer Road, Leyton, as 'good'.
A report acknowledged that staff had been working to increase pupil performance and achievements at each key stage had improved each year.
But Janice Williams, lead inspector, found secondary pupils did not make sufficiently good progress in English and mathematics and had fallen behind in science, drama, history, music and physical education.
The report said acting headteacher Claire Kirwin was well supported by her leadership team and had restored staff morale at the school, which is one of the borough's most deprived areas.
It added that most pupils were now no longer underachieving, while some are achieving well.
The all-through school is spread across five sites, with 941 pupils aged between three and 16.
The school was inspected on October 3.
