I have once again been patrolling the streets in my continuing crusade against craters.

I have now been campaigning for better bitumen in our district for almost a month. In that time I’ve seen two great repairs, but 21 potholes still need filling.

This week I have again been called to Buckhurst Hill to deal with four of the dastardly dents.

A pothole on the busy Buckhurst Way, on the 549 bus route, has been troubling traffic travelling south.

Chestnut Avenue, which runs parallel to Buckhurst Way and is used as a popular shortcut, suffers from ruinous ruts at either end of its length.

There were two examples of terrible tarmac at the junction with Oak Rise, the largest of which measured a whopping 16in by 18in and was no less than three inches deep.

I also noticed a cavernous crack at the other end of the avenue at the junction with Buckhurst Way.

That brings the total number of potholes indentified in the Buckhurst Hill area to a truly sickening six.

These latest discoveries put Buckhurst Hill second in the league of pothole shame. It is now second only to Epping, which has a very un-magnificent seven.

I have yet to hear reports from Roydon and Ongar, but I would be much surprised if these areas turned out be crater free.
