A team of gardeners will sport their finest facial topiary during November to raise awareness for prostate cancer.
Family business Perfect Gardens, based in Chingford Mount Road, has been carrying out horticulture work in Waltham Forest for over 100 years but this year male staff members decided to focus on their own growing efforts.
The idea grew from staff member Matt Yull’s idea of growing a moustache himself into a nine-strong effort to show support for the charity.
Matt Yull, 48, who lives in Broadley Common, near Roydon, planted the seed for the idea after his own close experience with the condition.
“My father-in-law died of prostate cancer and my grandfather died from it too,” he said.
“You never know, 10 years down the line it could be me.”
The business will make a donation from every new contract acquired during November in the hope of reaching a target of £500.
This is Mr Yull’s first Movember attempt.
He said he thought a change in the way he usually supports charities would make it more fun.
“I don’t know what suddenly made me go for the moustache thing, I’d just heard of Movember and it made it a bit more exciting than phoning up a charity with the credit card number.”
He said he will try to grow a “Kitchener-style” moustache.
Another employee, Daniel Adams, 36, who is also doing Movember for the first time, echoed Mr Yull’s comments and said he thought it would add an extra element of fun to supporting a good cause.
Having never grown more than a week’s worth of stubble before he added that he anticipated it would be quite itchy.
“I’d like to go for a Mexican-style moustache, but we’ll see,” he said.
