The owner of a barber shop and a prominent figure in the British Barbers Association (BBA) has been selected to teach a special master class in barbering in Hong Kong.

Sheriff Mehmet, owner of Envy Barbers in Chingford Mount Road, Chingford, travelled to a luxurious oriental hotel in Hong Kong with BBA Director, Michael Taylor, on Sunday.

Mr Mehmet has been carefully selected for the trip based on his industry expertise, philanthropic work and educational status.

At the start of the 10-day trip, Mr Mehmet will spend six days hosting a barbering master class at the five-star Mandarin Oriental hotel which has been grooming Hong Kong men 50 years.

Mr Mehmet said: “The UK barbering industry has always been ahead in terms of training.

“It will be a great privilege for me to teach our standards to others, share our knowledge, be inspirational and motivate people from other countries."

Mr Mehmet, 38, who has been a barber for 20 years, currently employs five members of staff at Envy Barbers, two of which are training for their professional qualification, including his 16 year-old son, Ahmet Sheriff Mehmet.

Mr Mehmet opened Envy Barbers 13 years ago and says his business continues to thrive as the emerging market of the men’s grooming industry takes hold.

“The male grooming market in the UK is worth around £850 million a year and it is growing fast. Men have changed, big time."

The married father-of-one has had many encounters with high-profile individuals during his time in Chingford, including customers such as Ronnie O’Sullivan and former England footballer Tim Sherwood.

Born into a family of barbers, Mr Mehmet learnt the tricks of his trade from watching family members give haircuts and styles to members of Waltham Forest’s community for the past 60 years.

He currently spends Tuesday evenings running a workshop for 16-19 year old barbers at Chris & Sons wholesalers in Enfield.
