CHILDREN hung on ‘human crosses’ and fantastical Mexican-style creatures featuring human teeth are part of the fourth Modern Panic exhibition.
From the visually spectactular to the awe inspiring and wonderfully weird, James Elphick of Guerrilla Zoo has gathered together the work of more than 70 of today’s foremost surreal, controversial and provocative international artists.
Cuban-born Erik Ravelo has already been creating waves with his Los Intocables (The Untouchables) series of photos of children hung like Jesus from the backs of soldiers, surgeons, priests and Ronald McDonald.
The images refer to pedophilia in the Vatican, child sex tourism in Thailand, the war in Syria, the trafficking of black market organs ‘donated’ by children in the developing world and obesity.
The artist’s Facebook page was censored last month after complaints about him posting the images on the website and complex.com listed the photos as one of the 21 ‘most controversial exhibitions of all time’.
It is now Londoners’ turn to decide if they are a step too far.
The exhibtion will also include Panic Sermons on Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 17 with live arts practitioners and performance artists creating work live in front of the audience.
- Apiary Studios, Hackney Road, Cambridge Heath, Saturday, November 9 to Sunday, November 17, 11am to 7pm.
