A controversial nightclub has lost an appeal against its hours being cut.
Opening times at Funky Mojoe in High Road, South Woodford, were reduced earlier this year after what was described as overwhelming evidence that it had become “a magnet” for serious trouble.
However, the nightclub was allowed to remain open until 2.30am on Friday and Saturday, and 12.30am on other days pending an appeal.
But it must now close its doors at 11.30pm at weekends, and 11pm during the week, after a district judge sitting at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court today upheld the council's decision.
Funky Mojoe was also ordered to pay the council’s £72,000 legal costs.
People living close to the club, including residents of a sheltered housing complex next door, have long complained about noise, crime and anti-social behaviour associated with customers.
During the initial hearing in April, Redbridge Council’s licensing panel watched CCTV footage of a series of violent incidents outside the club.
In a statement explaining its decision, the panel said: “The CCTV footage spoke for itself. We were stunned by some of what we saw.”
Cllr Richard Hoskins has campaigned on behalf of residents and was in court today to hear the judgement.
He said: “The district judge emphasised his respect for the quality of evidence given by the long-suffering residents.
“They chose to operate a nightclub in a totally unsuitable place next to residential flats.
“Doubtless they have made millions from the mass of customers they have attracted from miles away. But they should accept that now it is over.
"The decision will be welcomed by residents and though the fight has taken years. Residents will welcome a decent night’s sleep undisturbed by Mojoe's customers.”
The nightclub can appeal to the High Court to overturn today's decision, but until then, the club will have to abide by the new opening hours.
