Yasmin Greenfield, 24, lives on Hermon Hill, Wanstead, and is a children’s mentor at volunteer group Global Youth Network.
She is concerned about the road she lives on becoming dark and potentially dangerous as the evenings get darker earlier.
“As a female resident of Wanstead, an issue that concerns me greatly in the community is how dark Hermon Hill gets in the evenings,” she said.
“With Christmas approaching and earlier sunsets, it can be daunting walking up the road to my home when the day becomes dark.
“What I love about my community is that it is green. I can enjoy the perks of a leafy area and get into central London with great ease.
“What we do need to bear in mind though is that with big trees and bushes blocking many lampposts, we need more areas to be lit or for residents to trim their front gardens more often.
“The area gets extremely overgrown, leading to the road becoming increasingly dark and potentially dangerous, especially for young teenagers who may be more vulnerable.
“Quite a few of my friends feel the same way – one who lives on my road and another who lives in South Woodford, who would rather drive to my house than walk due to the badly lit road.
“Admittedly, until my front garden was trimmed on Monday it was posing the same problem. But now I get greater light in my home and also can see the lampposts more clearly.
“It is the residents themselves who need to be keeping an eye on the area and help each other feel safer in a community which on the whole is lovely to be part of.”
