A lorry travelled for a mile down the M11 in the wrong direction after the driver suffered a suspected heart attack at the wheel.
Police were called to the incident on the M11 between junctions 4 and 6, near the A406 in Woodford at around 4.45pm yesterday afternoon.
It is believed the lorry had been travelling northbound and crossed the central reservation on to the southbound carriageway, where it travelled for about a mile before coming to a stop.
The lorry did not collide with any other vehicle.
Essex ambulance service attended the scene and the driver was taken to an Essex hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Following the incident there were severe delays on the M25 at junction 27 clockwise and anti-clockwise to junction 6 as the lanes were closed.
One lane on the northbound carriageway of the M11 between junctions 4 and 5 was closed, but two remained open.
