A painter has spoken of his pride at working on a mural tribute to Alfred Hitchcock near the director's childhood home.

Working with illustrator Anna Mill, Mateusz Odronby created a flock of birds on flat fronts in High Road, Leytonstone, which pays homage to Hitchcock’s 1963 classic The Birds.

A long-term fan of Hitchcock’s work, Mr Odrobny added a subtle, last-minute feature which was not included on the original drawing.

He said: "On the very last day I said to myself, 'there has to be a portrait of Hitchcock' and saw it as the perfect moment to paint his face inside the eye of the biggest bird.

"It is just big enough to see close-up but from a distance it can be passed off as a reflection of the light.

"I watched Hitchcock from when I was a little kid and one day when I was high up on the scaffold at four in the morning I reflected on what I was doing.

"It was an emotional moment and this has been a real honour for me.

Spanning flat fronts and shops, the mural sits just yards from where Hitchcock grew up above his father’s greengrocers.
